5 Ways to Write a Biography

5 Ways to Write a Biography Simply put, a biography is the story of someone’s life. Writing it so that others may read it is not as simple as its definition though because some people would consider biographies to be one of the most boring types of literature. You would therefore need to combat that, and this is done by making the life story interesting. No, you do not make it interesting by making stuff up! Here are a few tips you can do to make the whole book interesting for the reader: 1) Be interested in the person you are writing about: It would be counter productive to write about a person who you would be disinterested in to begin with.  If you are interested in the person you choose to write about, then it would be easier for you to do research on the person and find out more about his life.  Also, you would naturally be able to write in an interested tone, which would also influence the reader’s approach to your subject matter. 2) Get your basic facts straight: It is important to make sure that the basic information regarding your subject is as accurate as possible.  The basic information would be items such as date of birth, place of birth, date of death (if applicable).  Biographies could also be considered as relevant sources of information, and they need to be fully credible. 3) Obtain firsthand information: There is primary and secondary information. Primary would be items such as journals, diaries and interviews with either the subject or those closely related to the subject.  These are very important sources as they would provide insights regarding your subject, his frame of mind as well as his personal opinions about people and situations.  Secondary information would be articles regarding your subject.  They could relate certain events, but would not really give anything else. 4) Decide what to highlight: The life of your subject may be interesting, but some events may be more interesting than others.  Also, events during childhood may have influenced his decision making in the future.  If his actions during a certain point in his career make him interesting, concentrate on events throughout his life that prepared him to handle that situation.  This would build the book up and make the whole story linked from start to finish.  It would also help to insert some anecdotes in between life changing events. 5) Describe a lot: The people who read the biography would not be familiar with the person you are writing about.  Be sure to describe him as much as you can.  His physical features, his face, his expressions, even his habits that make him stand out from the rest.  This would make him more human to the readers.  Do the same for some of his close friends.  If you do forget the name of one or two people in his life, do not make names up.  Instead, substitute if for a title such as mate, close friend or even a rank if they were in the military. The key to successfully writing a good biography is planning.  The book cannot contain every single event of a person’s life, so planning the events that you would want to put in would make it so much easier for you when you get to the writing phase.  If you do get the outline done, then you would not really have to be concerned about writer’s block, since you would already know where to start. One more thing that you can do, whenever you finish a portion of the story, read it out loud.  This would give you a sense of the rhythm that your readers will have when they pick up the book.  If it seems too staccato, then you may want to re-write the portion.  If not, then you know that you’re a step close to releasing a good biography. How to Bounce Back from Stress at Work

How to Bounce Back from Stress at Work When work is stressing you out, you can feel it right when you wake up. Instead of feeling inspired and ready for the day, you might feel trapped or fatigued. That feeling of dread is a clear sign of stress at work. Experiencing it every now and again is basically a universal experience, no matter how much you love your job or what type of work you do. The hard part about workplace stress is that it not only affects your performance at work, it can often bleed into life outside of your job. If you’re experiencing workplace stress, bouncing back can help to improve all areas of life. Though that’s often hard to accomplish, having some tools and plans in place can make the bounce back a little easier. Whether you’re feeling burnt out, experiencing interpersonal conflict with managers or other employees, recovering from a work injury, or dealing with a pay cut, there are ways to help reduce your stress to increase your overall happiness. Handling Burnout Being overworked, feeling underappreciated, clocking long hours, picking up the slack for others, and working outside of normal business hours can cause some serious burnout. A lack of attention to work-life balance can be a big problem for many people in the workforce, and it can lead to issues with a person’s health and wellness. If you feel like you can’t get a good balance, something needs to change ASAP. Some symptoms of burnout include: A lack of energy Finding it hard to concentrate Feeling irritable Experiencing sleep problems Body aches and pains A good work-life balance is of critical importance in the psychology of retaining top talent at a company. If a company wants to keep its best people, it needs to understand the importance of creating a balance. If you’re experiencing burnout, speak with your manager and discuss ways to ease your workload. Don’t be afraid to talk about your worth at the company and how the stress of being overworked isn’t sustainable for you. Consider bringing up the prospects of taking a long vacation, taking more breaks from work, or taking a walk during the work day. Make sure you’re firm in your need to lessen your load. If all else fails, try finding somewhere else to work; maintaining a healthy balance is far more important than any one job. Managing Interpersonal Conflict In a professional setting, people are often forced to work very closely with a lot of different personalities and adapt to them right away. However, it’s not uncommon for some of these to not jibe with yours. Issues with managers or other employees can happen, and it can leave a person feeling stressed and unhappy in their work environment. If this applies to you, don’t be afraid to utilize your HR department for any serious issues. Avoidance is a tactic to avoid stressful situations as well, so try to avoid the person you have conflict with as much as possible. Work hard to not get too emotionally involved in workplace conflicts. Instead, recognize them, avoid the problematic person, and consider speaking to HR. Don’t let toxic people have any control over your happiness. Recovering From a Work Injury A workplace injury can put you out of work for a while, depending on the severity of the injury. This can be stressful due to financial burden, having to miss work, and being in pain during the recovery process. Some of the more common workplace injuries include repetitive motion injuries, tripping, or strain. There are a lot of variables in terms of work injuries due to differing company policies, insurance types, workers compensation, and the nature of different injuries, but any of them can be stressful. One way to help get through the stress of a work injury is to have an emergency cash plan if you’re seriously injured and need to stay in the hospital. This might include a personal savings account, an HSA, or keeping a stockpile of PTO. Talk to your employer about your options and work on recovering quickly. You can also look into your state’s laws on workplace injuries and whether or not you qualify for workers’ compensation. At the end of the day, your health is the most important, so utilize on your support system and focus on recovery. Surviving a Pay Cut Losing financial stability can be a big source of stress that can stem from work and leak into all other areas of life. If you have experienced a pay cut, a demotion, a change in work hours, etc. that put your finances in a hard place, feeling stressed is completely normal. Bouncing back from a change in your financial standing will involve a look into how long this pay cut will last and if it’s sustainable for you. Work on creating a budget by outlining how much you make and how much your bills are for any given month. If it’s not sustainable, work on cutting down some expenses while you spruce up your resume to find other work. You can also try speaking to your employer and discussing your concerns with your pay. If you choose to leave, leave on good terms â€" even if you’re disgruntled. Control Your Stress at Work So It Doesnt Control You Experiencing stress at work is common, and many different scenarios can be the cause. Sometimes the key to finding a better work-life balance is to speak to your manager about your needs, and sometimes the key is practicing avoidance and focusing on your own happiness. You may need to prioritize your own health first, and the key may be finding employment that makes more sense for your needs. Troubleshooting solutions may not be fun, but it’ll lead you the right way to bounce back from your stress. Who Are the UKs Most In Demand Employers of 2015

Who Are the UKs Most In Demand Employers of 2015 During  LinkedIns much anticipated Talent Connect event in London this week, they revealed a list of the most in demand employers in the UK. So whos leading the way in talent attraction this year? Unsurprisingly the Tech giants Google and Apple led the way, with Google holding onto the top spot for a fourth year in a row and Apple climbing up to second place. The fashion industry have also been  stealing a bit of  the limelight, as  a few of the UKs most popular fashion retailers have also crept their way into the top end of the rankings, with John Lewis coming in third and ASOS in fourth. ASOS has been rapidly growing in popularity over the recent years, as online shopping has become more popular than ever and it would appear that their employer brand is as good as their consumer marketing, as  they were one of the biggest risers in the employer rankings in 2015. A few of the big names who have dropped out of the top 20 were  Amazon, British Airways, Goldman Sachs and Rolls-Royce; who have made way for big names such as Selfridges, Facebook, The Walt Disney Company, Net-A-Porter and  Topshop.  You can find a full list of the most sought after UK employers below. Commenting on the UK ranking, Chris Brown, Director LinkedIn Talent Solutions, said: “This list represents the organisations that have most successfully built their employer brand and who use this to engage great potential candidates online. They have identified what makes them special, what they can offer their employees, and have taken full advantage of digital and social media to bring this to life.” Earlier this year LinkedIn released the findings of research that found that UK companies who have poor reputations as employers, in turn will face higher wage bills and have a smaller candidate pool to hire from. This could potentially add up to an increased wage bill of more than £4m a year for a 10,000-strong company; so it is essential to invest in building a strong employer brand. Top 20 most in-demand employers among the UK’s LinkedIn members: 1.  Google (-) 2.  Apple (+1) 3.  John Lewis (-1) 4.  ASOS.com (+8) 5.  Shell (+1) 6.  BBC (-1) 7.  Selfridges (NE) 8.  Facebook (NE) 9.  Microsoft (-2) 10.  BP (-6) 11.  Unilever (-3) 12.  Burberry (-2) 13.  The Walt Disney Company (NE) 14.  ITV (-3) 15.  The Net-A-Porter Group (NE) 16.  Harrods (-) 17.  TOPSHOP TOPMAN (NE) 18.  Diageo (NE) 19.  Carillion (-2) 20.  McKinsey Company (NE) Image: Shutterstock

How to Give Negative Feedback to a Coworker - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How to Give Negative Feedback to a Coworker - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Unfortunately, managers do not always give positive feedback and sometimes they need to deliver negative feedback as well in order to keep all of the employees on track and help them reach their full potential. Although giving negative feedback is not an easy task, you may ease the process by following the below tips. Deliver Feedback Privately: Never deliver negative feedback to your coworkers in front of other team members because they may get offended. Also, don’t email negative feedback. People can misunderstand emails very easily. Always set up a private meeting and make the discussion in person. Be Constructive Not Destructive: Don’t attack your coworkers mentioning all of their negative behaviors. Try to explain the results of their negative behavior and tell them how they can fix it. For example; the reports you prepare doesn’t reflect so and so and this makes us lose money. However, if you prepare your reports differently/ the way we showed you/ x way, we can get ahead of our competitors/ we earn time and money. Don’t Wait: Don’t wait until the next performance review to give your feedback. Be timely and give both your positive and negative feedback regularly. If giving feedback becomes part of your weekly routine, then, your coworkers don’t get upset and your feedback doesn’t lose its importance due to timeout. Give the Other Person a Chance: Tell your coworker that you still believe him/her to try to encourage him/her. This will also cheer him/her up. Also, ask if s/he needs anything from you and how you can help. Then, let him/her speak so s/he can respond to your statements and mention his/her own opinions. Agree On an Action Plan: Decide together what you can to improve your coworker’s performance. Maybe, s/he needs more training or coaching. Maybe, you need to pair this person up with another employee to be his/her role model so s/he can start doing the things needed and stop doing the things unwanted. Follow-Up: Set up a specific time to follow up with this employee. In this follow-up meeting, review what s/he has done so far and his/her improvements. This will help him/her to regain confidence and encourage him/her to get more responsibility. Don’t micromanage the employee fearing that s/he can make another mistake. This can cause him/her lose his/her confidence again.

The Evolution of C-Suite Responsibilities in 2019 CareerMetis.com

The Evolution of C-Suite Responsibilities in 2019 Source â€" Pexels.comAs a business evolve, so do the roles and responsibilities of its leadership team. For years, there has been discussion about the evolving role of CEOs, but the conversation is accelerating. The entire C-Suite is evolving. To keep up with the emerging challenges businesses face today, the role of an executive is becoming increasingly more fluid. In this article, we will look at what the C-Suite used to be and what it’s becoming. While differences are to be expected across business leadership roles, in recent years, a greater need for flexibility has presented itself.evalRapid advancements in technology have created an entirely new normal for workplace culture, demands, and challenges. Without proper expertise or training, many of the obstacles businesses face cannot be settled by a traditional board.Emerging demands have created opportunities for the formation of new roles and the adjustments of others. Let’s start at the top of the executive chain.1) Chief Exe cutive Officer A thorough adoption of technology is essential for success in our hyper-digital world. Despite the fact most CEOs didn’t get where they are because of their technical background or expertise, the modern CEO should possess an expert set of digital capabilities and knowledge of how to drive innovation across their business model.A working knowledge of emerging tech, such as artificial intelligence and the cloud and their impacts on the workforce, is becoming increasingly essential for managing a modern-day company.CEOs should also understand cybersecurity. Over the past few years, the world has watched numerous companies fall victim to cyber attacks, putting customers’ and employees’ data at risk.Although nearly60 percent of CEOsfeel personally responsible for the protection of their customers’ data and recognize the potential consequences they face should an attack happen under them, the emphasis for stronger cyber security policy in this role is vital. 2) Chie f Information Officer Due to technology advancements and improved accessibility, there is an increased level of competition among tech-forward companies. As a result, CIOs today are expected to offer a larger range of abilities. Moving forward, we can expect those holding the role of CIO to have not only be business savvy but also have experience with analytics, budgeting, and maintaining a scalable infrastructure. With more and more companies working toward global growth, the challenge many of them face involves “reducing costs and increasing innovation,” as Oracle’s Mark Hurdexplains in his assessment of the evolving CIO role.“To meet these goals, there needs to be a greater emphasis on evaluating the necessary technology for tech-driven business innovation. And, that requires the people evaluating the technology to be business leaders,” as Forrester VP Michael Barnes said.CIOs today must learn to walk the fine line between ownership and reliance on trusted IT operators a nd vendors.3) Chief Financial Officer Traditionally, the role of CFO has been centered around financial reporting, company performance, and managing company checks and balances. However, in modern years, the role has inevitably changed.Enterprise companies’ financials have become increasingly complex and require additional accounting leads, allowing the CFO to take on a more strategic role. This coordination between accounting teams and CFOs will become increasingly common if companies want to keep pace with global growth and changing customer needs. As technology advances, CFOs will have to lead their organizations adoption of new processes and technologies to support top-line growth. In 2019, CFOs will need to prove they are finance focused andbusinesses focused. Delivering strategic insight toward effective corporate risk managementalongside financial reporting will be the future CFO’s goal.4) Chief Marketing Officer For some companies, the inclusion of an HR representative in the C-suite is established. They may go by the title of Chief Human Resources Offer, Chief People Officer, or Chief Talent Officer. However, in traditional organizations, HR is viewed primarily as an administrative role due its historical focus around paperwork and processes. In today’s world, however, businesses are faced with new issues, workplace demographics, and public scrutiny that impact the entire company.evalPublic events such as the #MeToo movement have given greater attention to the department than ever before, causing companies to pay more attention to the wellbeing and professional development of their employees. These situations, in combination with the fact HR is responsible for determining the future needs of a company in regards to required candidate skill sets, bring attention to the need for a strategic, forward-thinking executive.HR leaders of 2019 will need experience in handling more diverse demographics as company environments continue to blend boomers, mille nnials, and Generation Z employees, all with varying needs and contributions.6) Chief Cyber Security Officer A CCSO position would be responsible for overseeing security teams and providing an executive look at the current priorities, including cyber intelligence, data loss prevention, security architecture, and identity and program management. With so many facets to a thorough security plan, a lack of governance from a CCSO can lead to miscommunications and a lack of insights and training for chief executives. As the world changes, so do business operations. In our fast-paced, hyper-connected society, companies are facing more opportunities, challenges, and scrutinization than ever before. In order for organizations to withstand these changes, the C-suite has to expand.

Short story - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Short story - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog This winter I took a class in creative writing. Ive never written any fiction or poetry before, so I thought it would be a good challenge. It was, and one of the results was a short story called the mechanic about a regular guy called Benny, who discovers a mysterious and unsettling talent. Heres the entire story, let me know what you think. Its in danish, though. ?Mekanikeren? Alexander Kjerulf, November 2002 ?Hej, Benny, kom lige her.? Her blev tingene fikset. Benny var venstre back. J?rgen efterlignede Dorthe?s lidt nasale, klagende stemme. Benny t?vede. J?rgen fortsatte hurtigt. ?Jeg er heller ikke nem at have med at g?re, og og og jeg g?r nok heller ikke s? meget op i mit t?j som jeg skulle, og? J?rgen stoppede og kiggede p? Benny. Opl?seren summede videre i baggrunden. Benny pr?vede at forklare. Lad v?re med at s?lge huset. Skift job. Rejs til USA. Bliv hjemme. Gik ind i stuen. Granatchock i miniudgave. Thanks for visiting my blog.
